Road trip to The Script

I haven’t posted anything in a little while, but coupled with the fact that i had nothing to inspire me to write, I knew that the weekend away that was close on the calendar - whether incredibly amazing or incredibly shit, would inspire me to put some form of pen to paper.. and it definitely did. I was quite anxious for this (what I felt) Bittersweet experience, as one of my favourite bands – The Script were down and I had tickets to see them. Luckily I had a ‘team’ of keen roadtrippers coming with me, we all felt the need to get out of PE and away from our somewhat melancholy realities and do something fun! Cape Town – where else! Many deliberations were had the day before about what time to leave in the morning and apparently my suggestion on 8am (being night blind and not the best morning person in mid winter) was ludicrous! Which I’m quite glad I convinced myself of as well, coz even though it was 4am, yes, 4am... we were all super keen on the morning – even though we were still half asleep... well some of us... J So 4am, rolled outta bed, rolled into my clothes and rolled down the road to pick everyone up. It was crazy cold! Just saying. With a Boombox, camera’s, cases and shoe bags...(and Amish’s jacket – trust me it needs special mention – it weighed more than the shoe bag) I’m not sure how we managed to close the boot and there was absolutely no view out the rear window. Did we close it – Yes. Did we make a plan to see out the back – No. Did it matter? – Apparently not.. So we hit it. The little Getz (yep – still driving a hired car) was packed to the brim and ready to go... All that I needed was to get excited about it all. I figured once there, all would feel cool and we’d have an awesome time. Here’s an idea of how the morning started.

A bit blurry - but you get the idea....

As I said earlier, some of us still half asleep - but keen nonetheless - hence the smile :)

Amish's Lucky Strike Jacket - there was never place for this... anywhere... at any given time!

The rest of the weekend was full of happenings and little ventures really. It was made up of little hole-in-the-wall restaurants, milkshakes, quirky hotels, awesome shops and loads of graffiti. The culmination of all was the concert, which is a description on its own. But to get an idea of all the cool stuff that we saw and did along the way.. here are a bunch of photo’s.

The Grand daddy hotel – so many cool things happening at this place its childish. I only got to see the Trailer park section on the rooftop which was the coolest set up ever! Everything was so old-fashioned in such an elegant way, from the lifts, to the walls, and decor.. then boom! A bunch of crazy caravans and postboxes with names of the likes of ‘Afrofunkd’.

The Fire and Ice Hotel aka ‘The Extreme Hotel’ – Looove this place. Still haven’t seen the inside of any of the rooms.. but I reckon they’re much the same as any Protea hotel standard. But it’s the rest of the hotel that is an experience on it’s own. Also haven’t eaten there before – should give it a try next time, but all the coolest controversial stuff you could think of was going on in the lifts, bathrooms and restaurant of it.

Mr pickwicks, which I love to go to, to have the tastiest Peanut butter milkshake in the world.. became a place we went back to more than once on our weekend trip. It was totally the hole-in-the-wall winner all round – except for maybe the waiter we had for lunch on the Saturday (he was hating life and talking to us like ‘we’ were the idiots) It was quite funny to be honest. Either way, the food was average, milkshakes amazing, vibe bizarre? But a cool little spot. Bathrooms were clean but dirty with graffiti, pretty cool.

Woodstock – well this place is by far one of the coolest areas in cape town, though it’s not the safest. The graffiti on the walls and on the buildings was exceptionally good and the vibe down there was awesome. We went to the Old Biscuit Mill on Saturday morning for the food market, I’ve been before and loved it, this time was just as cool! There’s so much food and beverages and ‘sweet stuff’ to choose from - it’s MAD. And yes, I had a bar one crepe again – couldn’t not. Loads of little shops, all filled with such cool and interesting things that I felt like I was in my happy place... Anyway enough about it, it’s something you need to experience to know or better understand the ‘vibe’ and ‘feel’ I’m describing. Here are the photo’s from in and around Woodstock.

Other pics taken of things we saw and did........

Some African Art in the market side of Long Street. There were subtle implications that 'not everything that was for sale was on display' but that we should 'ask if there's something else we'd like'

We walked Long street a LOT! As did we up Kloof and a few others.. lotsa walking, lots to see...

Such tourists! Hahaha...

One of my favourite new little found treasures in Cape Town! A record store with absolutely anything you can think of. Nowhere near enough time was spent in there - but I will be back! Watch this space ;)

We were looking for Bombay Bicycle store and Gypsy the the GPS took us to a restaurant which had bicycles hanging all over it that sold Bombay... Cool stumbleupon..... very cool

Just in case I haven't already taken a million pics of the mountain EVERY time I've been to Cape Town, clearly I still see it as beautiful, every time.

Camps Bay sunset.... there is no other

Having done so much and starting to love every moment more as we did more, to come was still the pinnacle of the trip, the event which would be the culmination of all the events of the weekend.... and that was seeing The Script. Hayley was going to be singing along at my side and although we needed to play the Cd all the way to Grand West so we could refresh the lyrics in her mind (hahaha) she was cool to have there with me... J Our tickets had been collected the day before and now all that we needed to do was get the in queue and wait to experience a concert that’s main act and songs are close to my heart. Like I said... very anxious but when the soundcheck inside started, then I realised how excited I was that I was actually going to see them. It wasn’t golden circle – which was a humbling experience... but nevertheless it was going to be exceptional.... The Arrows opened for them with 3 very cool tracks.. They were awesome! But when The Script came on I was so overwhelmed. And this goes without saying, it is never ever, ever overrated when you hear an entire crowd of thousands singing the lyrics as he pauses for us to sing out loud. I had goosebumps from beginning to end. I was happy, I was sad, I was singing out loud and then listening.... It’s indescribable the way being in front of musicians live makes me feel, and it’s something I will continue to do and make an effort to be a part of. I just hope that in the future all those who feel that way will do so with me, that way you have someone you can talk about the experience with that ‘gets it’ the way it’s meant to be.. Pics were difficult to take, but a few came out... I was more into just being there than capturing it - Though I did manage to record quite a few songs. An amazing band, with seriously cool and heartfelt songs.... I was very lucky and grateful that I was able to go. It meant huge amounts to see them.

After all was said and done it was time to hit the road back home and back to reality. What a cool weekend, I hope that there are many more of these to come and that are ideal in so many more cool ways. Cape Town, my home away from home... special memories live there.

The bakerman can

Cold weather and birthdays called for a lot of baking this past week. Though I enjoy it - which is most likely why I was elected to make all these crazy, tasty sensations - it also served as a fun, time passing distraction.. It started with a batch of brownies, which I decided to drop off with my friends... everyone appreciates chocolate right? Especially chocolate brownies. So that was good..great even! And the next task which was very sneakily decided between myself and my good friend Amish, was to bake a bar one cake for Quinsley's birthday. Well, we've been waiting forever to make this friggin cake, but when does the occasion ever come around where you just randomly bake a cake... other than maybe in my kitchen :) So, there was a birthday, a cake was needed, one made with TLC, and it was the tastiest, richest thing this side of the world. Trying to disguise the fact that we were making a cake and the next day getting the cake lit with candles and into the office was a difficult task. Only because when your hands are full of chocolate - it's quite challenging to text! Ill leave it at that.... Please note - cheesecake was also consumed - the most delicious thing ever! But not at my baking hands.. Last on the mark and in the oven (to date) are the Nutella, choc chip cookies that needed to be made. Well, flip, after 3 batches finally all these effing things are done! It was cool though.. No idea where the evening's gone, but now I'm in bed and my home smells of a bakery... that aside, it's pretty warm too. Oh, they taste delicious by the way.. deliveries on the way tomorrow.. Confectionery always cheers people up.. I like that I can do that... Here are a few pics of the kitchen and cakey vibes...

Happy Birthday Quinsley!! Bar one cake...
Getting my 'bake' on - pineapple juice was for my own thirst quenching :)
The stuff that's gonna make these cookies irresistible!
Nutella Choc chip cookies, difficult to see properly - but taste de'lish!

C'est la vie

Such is my life.. I decided it would be a good idea to get involved in a car accident on Friday last week and now I am driving all sorts of cars, Car 1- Automatic 1.6 Getz (seriously sharp brakes), Car 2 - Automatic 1.4 Merc (virtually no brakes), Car 3 - Manual 1.4 Golf (Clutch takes so late that i started revving like a learner driver every time i pulled away) Sigh... The assessor will be looking at my car today and deciding it's fate. Then I will adopt a 4th car, which I'm assuming will be the best of the lot I have been driving. Hopefully I have it long enough to drive to Cape town. Which I'm hoping all still happens.. Not much else happening, chilled weekend, Sunday was a good day, the rest pretty average. All I know is that there isn't an easy day in life when you're grownup... every decision affects your future. Looking at the trouble to one side gets you into your own trouble right in front of you. Though I've been wanting to get a new car for some time.. I was ok with the wait, now I've been forced to find it. Let's hope I get it... We'll see.. Short week.. I always appreciate the holidays these days. Sleep is tough, days are cold, and work is effort, energy for it is often low... so, to Youth day... looking forward to you....

Am I doing it right?

Most days are fine... Some day's are amazing, yet there are few days in between all the 'normality' that get us feeling a little down, empty, alone, lost, and scared that we may not be doing it right. Doing what right? Life... as we know it. Or 'think' we know it. What do you want to be when you grow up changes from 'an astronaut' at 10 years of age to 'successful' at 18 years to eventually the same tune that everyone who has experienced and understood how tough life is - 'i want to be happy'. My question is... why aren't we happy now? Why do you want to reach happiness? Is it a place? Is it a group of elements that make you feel happy? Once you have the husband, house, and white picket fence (archaic cliche) do you honestly believe that you will then have every day lived as a happy one? It's impossible. There will always be happy days and there will always be unhappy days. regardless of your set up in life. So why not try and maximize the happy days and reduce the unhappy ones. A good way to start, is to believe that you don't need to wait for it.. funny that? Happiness is being able to do what you love, it's having people around you that you love and love you back, it's doing things that you want to do in life. So if I am already doing these things... am I not already living my dream? Everyone's waiting for their dream to come true.. My life as I know it, is my dream come true.. I don't need to wait for someone to complete my life.. the people I have in it now complete it far beyond my imaginations. I don't need one person to make memories out of life with, I'm lucky I'm getting to make them with a few. So back to my point... am I doing it right? Everyone finds someone, falls in love, gets married, gets a house, has a kid (or two), see less of their friends, see more of their family, then sees less of their family and more of the inside of their own home, then realise they still have 40 odd years to get through before they die... and erm.. end up going... now what? So, I am not doing that.. I am seeing friends, seeing family, going places, working hard, making memories, growing those friendships, and not really waiting for life to happen, but have come to realise that is is happening. Sometimes I feel down and alone, but most days I feel happy and lucky, and definitely not behind.... luckily the people who need to understand that, do... which makes the hard days a little easier and the easy days a blessing....

The Script... is on my calendar..

Before the Worst...
There was a time, that we'd stay up all night
Best friends talking 'til the daylight
Took the joys alongside the pain
With not much to lose but so much to gain
Are hearing me? Cause I don't wanna miss,
That you would drift on memory bliss
It was Grafton Street on a rainy night
I was down on one knee and you where mine for life

We we're thinking we would never be apart
With your name tattooed across my heart
Who would have thought it would end up like this?
Where everything we talked about is gone
And the only chance we have of moving on

Was trying to take it back before it all went wrong

Before the worst, before we met
Before our hearts decide
It's time to love again
Before too late, before too long
Lets try to take it back
Before it all went wrong

Soup for the Soul

Hahahaha, please..! I can never get over how many of those 'self help' books my mom has in her bookcase.. actually you'll find some in the drawers, in a packet that she's most likely forgotten it's still in, they're above her headboard, there's most likely even a pocket version in her bag..! Either way, they're all the same, and they're all just pages and pages of crap. (Sorry mom!) When you purchase a 'soup for the soul' book, you have just given someone just like you, (who actually had the energy to sit down, get a publicist and a bunch of regurgitated notes on the stuff) R200 to tell you in black and white - "available now in hard cover!" - what you should do and what you shouldn't do in order to live a life that's fulfilling and brings about contentment within the workplace, with your loved ones and within yourself.. Erm... These authors are scam artists. They haven't figured out the 'secret to life' They're just good multitaskers and probably have the easiest life in the world. No one who has had enough passion on this topic can honestly have had the time to write a book on it. If they lived that difficult life whereby they needed to be told how to stick post it's up all over telling themselves how amazing and capable they are, because they're too run down and tired enough to not know this themselves... then how, on earth, did they find the time to write a book?! Ok, assuming they get it together and have figured out what worked, right? Coz they read it in a book when they needed all the help they could get. So, now my question is.. if you read it in a book and it worked.. Why then.......... write another??? Like I said regurgitating the same old crap with a different pretty colour and calling it something else, is plagiarism! I wish she had saved all her money and just come to me and I'd have printed a million pages off the net and bound it nicely for her, even with a little inscription saying 'Here's the help you need.. and I saved you some bucks so you can just skim over the money issue section' With love... hahaaha.

So there's an entire range of 'Chicken soup for the Soul' books.. This author's making money if you're depressed, if you're a mom, if you're a dad, if you're a runner, if you have pets, if you're a twin... the list continues. Amazing with all the literature out there, that this is what we spend our money on reading. Other people telling us things we already know..

I say screw Chicken Soup for the soul.......... I want real soup...! Hot, feel-good soup with some crusty bread, now that's soup worth spending money on...... let's get more of that.
